Established in 1854, Salem State University is a four-year public institution with a student population of over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Initially known as the Salem Normal School, the university began as a two-year educational institution solely devoted to women. In fact, Charlotte Forten (among the second graduating class), was the first African American teacher to travel to the South during the Civil War and teach emancipated slaves.

Today, Salem State University is made up of five campuses, with the main campus located 1.5 miles south of downtown Salem – just a few blocks from the picturesque Salem Harbor. While the majority of Salem State University students commute from off-campus housing, the university does house approximately 2,000 students in on-campus residence halls.

In recent years, Salem State University has undergone a significant, multi-year expansion and modernization plan. Located on Central Campus, students will find the Bertolon School of Business, the Music Department, a new campus bookstore, a new residence hall amongst others.

All Salem State University athletic teams, the Vikings, compete in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference – NCAA Division III. The university offers 17 varsity sports including men’s baseball, women’s softball, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s cross-country, women’s volleyball and others.
